Many people likely don’t know this, but from December 2024 to June 2025, we made a major shift in our staff schedule and structure. Due to staff turnover, we decided to move to a houseparent model instead of our traditional schedule, in which operations staff worked a few overnights each week. This meant two staff wives would join their husbands in daily operations and other responsibilities for a full week at a time. It was an unconventional shift, but the blessings that came from it were amazing.

Almost every boy who comes through Youth-Reach Houston has experienced some form of family brokenness, whether through divorce, separation from biological parents or a death in the family. Two of the most important things we can provide for our boys are consistency and reliability — things many of them have never experienced. They have every reason to expect more of what they’ve always known, and it’s up to us to change that and introduce them to the hope that things can be different.

For more than 40 years, that task has been taken up primarily by the male staff members who do life with the boys every day. While filling the role of a healthy father figure is vital, God designed fathers and mothers to bring distinct strengths to a child’s life. That became clearer than ever when the wives stepped into daily life with the boys.

Many of the boys who come into our home have strained or absent relationships with their fathers, and that often means they may gravitate toward women more than men for a time. With the women here at Youth-Reach Houston more involved than ever, we’ve seen immense healing in the wounds these boys carry from their family experiences. These women bring both strength and gentle nurture to the way we care for our boys, reflecting God’s intentional design.

Not only does this create a healthier dynamic in the home, but it also sets an example for the boys of how a husband should treat his wife and how a wife should treat her husband. With these couples working together, the boys get to see a new picture of how God designed a family to work together in good times and hard times.

Most of our boys will one day be husbands, and these women do an amazing job of modeling the qualities of a godly wife they should one day look for. This is generational work, and we believe the future wives and children of these boys will benefit greatly because of it.
