A Meaningful Sabbatical - Curt Williams

As I write this, I am sitting on the small porch of a small mountainside casita outside a small town in Costa Rica. I am on day 18 of a much-appreciated sabbatical that has been talked about for a year or two and finally came to pass. This is my first meaningful sabbatical in 39+ years of non-stop ministry, where my staff and the boards of Youth-Reach Houston and Youth-Reach Gulf Coast came together to make this provision possible.

Getting away to any location in the States for a month in May would be an expensive endeavor, but here in Atenas, Costa Rica it’s the off-season and I’m far from any tourist mecca, so the cost to stay where I am is ridiculously low. Not to mention that for most of my time here, I have been the only person on the entire property.

Loosely, I have broken up my month here as follows: The first week provides time for me to disconnect and unwind, doing all I can to silence my mind and prepare it for the Holy Spirit to do His work. Weeks two and three are for tuning into God’s word, pressing in with prayer, long walks, solitude, listening, and journaling. The fourth week is dedicated to preparation for re-entry so that I will retain what I have gained, digest what I have been taught, and return refreshed and renewed.

My deepest gratitude to everyone who made this opportunity possible!
